The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Roy F. Schroeder (ASN: 37327718), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Detachment, *** Chemical Battalion (Motorized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 22 January 1945, in Luxembourg. On this date, Technician Fifth Grade Schroeder, medical aid man, 2d platoon, Company C, was dug in 1,000 yards north of Lipperscheid, Luxembourg, with the platoon supporting the 2d Battalion, *** Infantry Regiment with close mortar fire in the attack on the enemy held town of Hoscheid. The area was under heavy enemy shell fire. An area immediately adjoining the mortar position had been intermittently shelled for six hours. A barrage estimated at 6 to 15 rounds fell every 15 to 20 minutes into a small area. Three infantry medics entering the area were caught in a barrage, one was instantly killed, and one fell seriously wounded. The third, hit in the arm, ran to a mortar position and requested help. Technician Fifth Grade Schroeder voluntarily left his fox hole and entered the normal barrage area under enemy shall fire to give aid to the wounded Infantry medic and helped evacuate him. The complete disregard for personal safety and high sense of duty displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Schroeder in this voluntary action of extreme danger reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
