Headquarters, III Corps, General Orders No. 19 (February 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph R. Nunn (ASN: 38306525), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 468th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self-Propelled), III Corps, in action at *****, Belgium, from 29 to 30 December 1944. Corporal Driskill, squad leader, was a member of a section of the 1st platoon of Battery B furnishing anti-aircraft protection to a field artillery battery. In addition to enemy artillery shelling, the position was subjected to five attacks during the night by flights of 8 to 12 enemy planes. Despite the strafing and bombing by enemy aircraft, the enemy artillery shelling directed at the area and an anti-personnel bomb that exploded beneath his mount, Technician Fifth Grade Martinez remained at his guns and continued to assist and deliver intense and accurate fire on the enemy aircraft. As a result of his actions four of the attacking planes were brought down, and the attack upon the field artillery battery was diverted. He and the members of his section repeatedly displayed audacious determination and steadfast devotion to duty by remaining at their guns in spite of the superiority of the attacking enemy forces. Technician Fifth Grade Martinez, by his indomitable courage, reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
