Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 2 (January 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Paul S. Lewin (ASN: 36606367), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 12 December 1944, in France. Corporal Lewin was a member of a Forward Observation Party working with the 3d Battalion, *** Infantry Regiment of the 35th Infantry Division. The battalion had attacked but had been forced to withdraw to a point about 500 yards west of the town of Blies-Ebersing along the river Bliss. The enemy were on a ridge about 150 yards away overlooking the area and keeping it under mortar and small arms fire. Visibility was good. Several men had been wounded and were lying in an open field under enemy small arms fire. Corporal Lewin, disregarding his personal safety, ran into the field to administer first aid and evacuate the wounded. He carried two of the wounded men from the field to the battalion aid station, thereby saving their lives. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Corporal Lewin reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
