Headquarters, III Corps, General Orders No. 24 (February 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John J. Kerr (ASN: 33140775), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 3d Chemical Battalion (Motorized), III Corps, in action against the enemy on 6 December 1944, near *****, France. Corporal Kerr, radio operator, reported with his executive officer to an infantry command post to direct mortar support during a fierce enemy attack. He fearlessly drove two thousand yards under intense artillery fire. When stopped by a road block, he raced heroically on foot carrying the radio across eight hundred yards of open ground covered by heavy shell fire. Reaching his objective, he promptly established radio contact with their platoon and called for immediate supporting fire. His conspicuous gallantry, aggressiveness, and disregard fore personal danger exemplify the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
