The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Loyal V. Bewley (ASN: 0-231666), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 3 December 1944, in France. Lieutenant Colonel Bewley, who was visiting the front lines of the *** Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in the woods southeast of *******, noticed that a platoon of Company A which was being subjected to extremely heavy artillery fire consisting for the most part of tree bursts, had lost contact with the company and was badly disorganized. Making his way up to the platoon, he contacted the platoon leader, assisted in reorganizing the platoon, and personally led two runners from the platoon to the company, thereby re-establishing contact. This action of Lieutenant Colonel Bewley’s showed unusual leadership and utter disregard for personal safety, and had a tremendous steadying influence upon the members of the platoon and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Forces of the United States.
