The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Otis D. Alsobrook (ASN: 0-534011), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 8 September 1944, in France. While under heavy and accurate enemy counter-battery fire, Lieutenant Alsobrook ran from safe shelter to extinguish burning propelling charges which had already set an M-7 vehicle and camouflage net ablaze and was causing automatic discharge of bullets from small arms clips. Impelled by Lieutenant Alsobrook’s bravery, a small party of volunteers rushed to his assistance. First attempts to extinguish the fire by cutting and pulling the net appeared futile against the spreading flames. Hen, with shells still bursting in the position, Lieutenant Alsobrook calmly posted his volunteer group in such a manner as to hold the burning net so the tank could be driven from beneath. Lieutenant Alsobrook then crawled under the flaming net and climbed up the side of the tank into the driver’s seat. After driving the tank safely into the open, Lieutenant Alsobrook hurriedly smothered the burning equipment on the M-7’s rear deck. Within 15 minutes the piece was back in action, hurling shells toward the enemy at a maximum rate of fire. Lieutenant Alsobrook’s initiative, leadership, and courage reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
