Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7369 (December 20, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Johnny A. Moody (ASN: RA-10838070), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with a hostile force, in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Moody distinguished himself by valorous actions on 9 November 1967, while serving with Howitzer Battery, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. As the resupply helicopter was attempting to take off from the fire support base, the heavily laden aircraft lost power and crashed just outside the base perimeter. Private Moody observed the crash and, grabbing a fire extinguisher, dashed outside the safety of the perimeter to the downed helicopter. As he neared the scene, the fuel aboard the helicopter erupted in flames, greatly endangering the occupants. In complete disregard for his own safety; Private Moody leaped atop the aircraft and extinguished the spreading fire. His staunch courage prevented further injury to his fellow soldiers Private First Class Moody’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
