The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Glenn A. Mills, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 1 December 1969 while serving with the 919th Engineer Company (Armored), 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date he was driving a water truck at the Quan Loi base camp when he spotted a fire. Upon reaching the blaze, he found a stock of approximately three hundred mortar rounds burning. Though the crew of the mortar piece had fled from the area, Specialist Mills began spraying the fire with water from his truck. Despite the possibility that the ammunition would explode, continued to fight the blaze until it was extinguished. Specialist Four Mills actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
