Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 4351 (November 21, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class Walter M. Geyer, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 8 October 1970 while serving as Noncommissioned Officer in charge of a vehicle with Troop F, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Specialist Geyer observed members of his crew mishandling a box of blasting caps. Immediately and with complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Geyer warned the crew members, pushing one member out of the area as the box exploded. Although this action caused him to be seriously wounded, he prevented the possible death or serious injury of his crew members. Specialist Five Geyer’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
