The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Turner L. Dorton, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 16 August 1970 while serving as an Armorer with Troop G, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, the squadron ammunition holding area erupted with a series of explosions caused by a fire in the area, Burning debris and fragments filled the air, igniting a pallet of machinegun ammunition as well as same C-4 explosive, which started a fire on the deck of a vehicle. Specialist Dorton immediately secured firefighting equipment and, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, helped extinguish the blaze, thus saving the remaining supplies and keeping injuries to a minimum. Specialist Four Dorton’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
