The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Armor) Bernard M. Davall, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Davall distinguished himself while serving with Headquarters, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in action at Di An Base Camp. On this date, an ammunition holding area caught fire, and several explosions resulted. Major Davall left the safety of the Regimental Tactical Operations Center while ammunition was still exploding, instructed NCO’s to clear the area of troops and proceeded through the area, moving personnel away from the dangerous ammunition. He entered the ammunition area to search for casualties and then established traffic controls and organized teams to search for and mark dud rounds. He remained in the area until the fire had been extinguished. Major Davall’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
