Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 2576 (September 4, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Armor) John S. Crow, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Crow distinguished himself while serving at Di An Base Camp when an ammunition holding area caught fire and several explosions resulted. Major Crow left the safety of the Regimental Tactical Operations Center, directed troops out of the area and established road blocks. Although the area was littered with grenades and mortar rounds and the ammunition was still burning, he entered the storage area and searched for casualties. He then established traffic controls, organized teams to search for and mark dud rounds and remained in the area until the fire was out and the dangerous explosives were removed. Major Crow’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
