The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Val R. Cramey, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 26 June 1970 while serving as an Aid Man with Troop K, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, a helicopter was removing equipment from Fire Support Base Susan when one of its engines exploded, causing the craft to burst into flames and crash to the ground. Immediate, Specialist Cramey ran into the burning inferno and aided in removing the crew to safety. He then returned to free a trapped pilot and carry him to safety. Specialist Four Cramey’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
