The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class William R. Clark (ASN: US-53416681), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Troop E, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Clark distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 18 October 1966 while serving as a crew member of an M-113 personnel carrier at Long Binh. On this date, an armed helicopter accidentally ejected approximately 60 smoke grenades into the area of Private First Class Clark’s unit with three falling into his personnel carrier. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private First Class Clark immediately entered the burning carrier and removed the smoke grenades. With complete disregard for his safety, he reentered the burning vehicle to extinguish the flames and to remove numerous containers of explosive material. Through his courage, he saved the personnel carrier and its load of equipment and ammunition from destruction. Private First Class Clark’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
