The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Gary W. Cannady (ASN: US-51838020), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 31 January 1969 while serving as a gunner with Troop E, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while the troop was conducting a reconnaissance mission, Private Cannady’s vehicle hit an enemy mine, and he was thrown to the ground. As he got up and surveyed the situation, he realized that the driver was still in the vehicle. Though it was now fully engulfed in flames and the large amount of ammunition on board was exploding, Private Cannady mounted the vehicle and quickly pulled the injured driver from his burning compartment. After moving him out of the area of immediate danger, Private Cannady quickly extinguished his injured comrade’s burning clothing. Although Private Cannady received severe burns, he was able to save his fellow soldier’s life. Private First Class Cannady’s outstanding courage and deep concern for the welfare of his comrade were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
