The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Howard A. Amey (ASN: US-52652972), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Troop E, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Amey distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 18 October 1966 while serving as a crew member of an M-113 personnel carrier at Long Binh. On this date, an armed helicopter accidentally ejected approximately 60 smoke grenades into the area of Specialist Fourth Class Amey’s unit with three falling into his personnel carrier. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Specialist Fourth Class Amey immediately entered the burning carrier and removed the smoke grenades. With complete disregard to his safety, he reentered the burning vehicle to extinguish the flames and to remove numerous containers of explosive material. Through his courage, he saved the personnel carrier and its load of equipment and ammunition from destruction. Specialist Fourth Class Amey’s heroic action were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
