Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 3799 (August 5, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Military Police Corps) Frederick W. Honerkamp, III (ASN: 0-5236568), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Honerkamp distinguished himself by valorous actions on 20 June 1968 at the Long Binh fuel jetty on the Dong Nai River. A fire broke out aboard two fuel barges moored at the jetty. Lieutenant Honerkamp joined a fire fighting force on a landing craft equipped to battle the blaze. Despite the intense heat and the danger that the barges might explode at any moment, his ship was brought flush to one of the burning vessels to get close enough to fight the fire effectively. The fire was brought under control but could not be extinguished. Disregarding his safety, Lieutenant Honerkamp boarded the still blazing barge and ran across its blistering deck to disconnect its lines from the pier, allowing it to drift downstream where it would not cause further damage if it exploded. First Lieutenant Honerkamp’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
