The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Marvin R. Bloom (ASN: RA-17443888), United States Army, for heroism above and beyond that required in his performance of duties while serving with the United States Army Quartermaster Group, Okinawa, on 22 September 1959. Upon witnessing the crash of an HOK-1 Helicopter at MCAF, Futenma Airstrip, Specialist Fourth Class Bloom drove his vehicle immediately to the scene of the crash. Although clad only in a cotton military uniform, Specialist Fourth Class Bloom, together with four members of MCB-3, rushed into the flaming wreckage and carried a pilot to safety. In performing this heroic action, he showed utter disregard for his own personal safety. His immediate action and exceptional bravery are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army.
