Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 2650 (June 20, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Duncan W. Wortmann, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 12 April 1970 while serving as a Pilot with Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Warrant Officer Wortmann was flying as control for another helicopter who was conducting a sniffer mission. Suddenly the helicopter began receiving intense ground fire, and after being hit numerous times it crashed. Immediately Warrant Officer Wortmann rolled in with his gunship, placing accurate fire on the enemy. When all of his ordnance was expended he remained over the site to control the enemy. As the Aero Rifle Platoon was inserted near the downed craft, Warrant Officer Wortman flew his helicopter as a decoy to draw the insurgents’ fire while the crew was being rescued. Warrant Officer Wortmann’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
