Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1851 (May 14, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Wayne S. Stanfield, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 10 March 1970 while serving as driver of an assault vehicle with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date the troop came in contact with an estimate battalion size element of North Vietnamese soldiers who were equipped with rocket propelled grenades, recoilless rifles, automatic weapons and small arms. During the initial moment of contact Private Stanfield’s vehicle was struck by three rocket propelled grenades, which seriously injured the entire crew and severely burned Private Stanfield. With complete disregard for his safety, he dismounted and placed suppressive fire upon a rocket propelled grenade team preparing to fire. With the still deadly enemy fusillade endangering his life, Private Stanfield ran to the medic vehicle to summon medical assistance. Returning to the vehicle he gave first aid to the injured crew members until a vehicle arrived to carry the men off to an evacuation area. While awaiting his own medical evacuation, Private Stanfield continued to administer first aid to his fellow crew members. Only after the other wounded were evacuated did he allow himself to be treated and further evacuated. Private Stanfield’s actions aided the troop in inflicting many enemy casualties as well as capturing valuable documents and weapons. Private First Class Stanfield’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
