Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 5610 (October 26, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) Allan L. Smith (ASN: 0-5405528), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Smith distinguished himself by valorous actions on 12 August 1967, while serving as a Rotary Wing Aviator an Fire Team Leader with Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Captain Smith was alerted to direct his team in support of personnel recovery operations of an OH-23G observation helicopter that had experienced engine trouble and made a forced landing in a small clearing. Arriving at the scene, Captain Smith braved a heavy line of squalls and impending darkness to lead his team in providing protection for another OH-23G helicopter that was to extract the personnel from the downed aircraft. As the rescue helicopter hovered a few feet off the ground, it experienced engine failure, falling on top of the downed helicopter and causing both to burst into flames. In complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Smith inched his large gunship through dense vegetation and driving rain to reach the survivors of the crash. Displaying consummate aerial skill, Captain Smith then guided his aircraft out of the confined area and sped back to the base camp. Captain Smith’s courage, devotion to duty and perseverance are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
