The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer James A. Small (ASN: W-3152855), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Chief Warrant Officer Small distinguished himself by valorous actions on 29 April 1967, while serving as a rotary wing aviator with Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. Warrant Officer Small was alerted to provide aerial support for a friendly ground force that had uncovered a large Viet Cong field hospital near Dau Tieng. Within minutes of notifications, Warrant Officer Small was on station as a part of a fire team. He was notified that an estimated 70 Viet Cong had taken refuge in a nearby rubber plantation, and in total disregard for his own safety Warrant Officer Small initiated a series of firing passes upon the enemy. He bravely continued to pour fire into the midst of the insurgents until all ammunition aboard the aircraft was expended. Warrant Officer Small then executed a final daring pass over the area, employing the personal weapons of his crewmen. His decisive actions accounted for 10 enemy killed and provided superb aerial support. Chief Warrant Officer Small’s outstanding flying ability, courage and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
