Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1983 (August 11, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Michael J. Share, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 29 April 1969 while serving as a scout section leader with Troop G, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while escorting some damaged vehicles to a night defensive position near Tonle Cham, elements of Troop G were suddenly engaged by an estimated reinforced platoon of North Vietnamese Army soldiers using automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades. In the opening moments of the fire fight, Sergeant Share’s assault vehicle was hit by an antitank rocket, killing the driver and seriously wounding the crew. Sergeant Share immediately placed suppressive fire on the enemy positions while he maneuvered the vehicle to cover the evacuation of the injured men. After making certain they were evacuated safely he dismounted and quickly took command of a small group of men to lead an assault against the fortified enemy positions. They were immediately met by heavy volumes of automatic weapons fire, but, undaunted, they completely overran the hostile force. This action resulted in nine dead hostile troops and the capture of a large amount of enemy material. Staff Sergeant Share’s courage, calm professional manner and complete disregard for his personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
