The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Donald L. Scott (ASN: W-3161450), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 1 December 1968 while serving as a pilot with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Warrant Officer Scott’s aircraft was called upon to fly a night emergency resupply mission. As the resupply ship approached the landing zone, it immediately received intense hostile fire causing the engine to fail. With the aid of the aircraft commander, Warrant Officer Scott took control of the aircraft and maneuvered it through the critical area into the small clearing without injury to any of the crew and only minor damage to the aircraft. After landing, Warrant Officer Scott assisted in setting up a defensive perimeter around the aircraft until a ground element arrived 30 minutes later to rescue the crew. Warrant Officer Scott’s outstanding flying ability and outstanding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
