The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Dewey W. Rowe, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 14 August 1969 while serving as a pilot with 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Warrant Officer Rowe was flying in support of a convoy when it suddenly became engaged by an unknown-size enemy force. Warrant Officer Rowe spotted a light observation helicopter which had been downed by the intense hostile fusillade. He made a pass and hovered just above the craft so the other crew could climb aboard with vital instruments. He braved a constant hail of lead impacting in and around his aircraft. When all personnel and equipment had been loaded, Warrant Officer Rowe then guided his ship out of the area, escaping unharmed. Warrant Officer Rowe’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
