The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Armor) James B. Reed, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 12 June 1970 while serving as Squadron Commander with 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, when Troop A was suddenly engaged by an enemy force of undetermined size, Colonel Reed immediately directed his command and control ship to the area of contact. He continued to direct the ship through heavy rain and fog, at tree top level, while adjusting accurate artillery and rocket propelled grenade fire upon the enemy positions. Although the ship was critically damaged, Colonel Reed unhesitatingly directed his ship to land and pick up size casualties, all the while under intense enemy fire. Colonel Reed’s decisions, with total disregard for his own safety, were a major factor in saving the lives of the wounded men. Lieutenant Colonel Reed’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
