The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph S. Redon, III, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 12 August 1969 while serving as an armored cavalry assault vehicle driver with Troop E, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Troop E was on a reconnaissance mission when it was suddenly engaged by an estimated battalion of North Vietnamese Army soldiers in a well concealed base camp. In the initial moments of the contact, the outnumbered troop sustained numerous casualties as it encountered fire from all directions. Private Redon spotted a wounded man and raced to his aid through the intense hostile fire and administered first aid to him. After returning with a stretcher, Private Redon, with the help of another man, placed the wounded man on the litter and brought the man through the intense hostile fire to a safe position and continued to help removing more injured soldiers. He then manned a machine gun and placed suppressive fire until the troop withdrew to allow artillery strikes on the enemy positions. Private First Class Redon’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
