Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders 732 (February 20, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Wilbert Radosevich (ASN: OF-106458), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, while serving with Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. First Lieutenant Radosevich distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 2 December 1966 while commanding a convoy escort near Gia Ray. Lieutenant Radosevich was in the lead tank which took the brunt of the Viet Cong attack. A mine explosion under its right fender temporarily halted the whole convoy. Lieutenant Radosevich calmly reported the attack and his location, then switched to his platoon frequency and began a defensive and fixing action to prevent the insurgents from breaking contact. His tank received at least three direct hits from anti-tank weapons, one of which wounded him. Though he could see with only one eye through a haze of blood, he kept his vehicle in motion to prevent the insurgents from disabling it, assigned areas of responsibility to individual vehicles, and maintained his men’s steady return fire. When large shells began landing near the convoy, Lieutenant Radosevich sent all of the trucks out of the contact area, but detained his combat vehicles to pin down the Viet Cong until the reaction force began entering the area. Lieutenant Radosevich’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
