The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Gerald T. Oesterreich (ASN: 17140604), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Company F, *** Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Wehra, Germany, on 9 April 1945. The platoon leader was crossing a stream to ascertain whether it was fordable for foot elements, when he sank in mud to his hips which permitted the waters to rise around his head. Private Oesterreich, realizing the officer was helpless, plunged into the swift waters, freed the officer, and towed him to shore. His heroic and unselfish rescue of his officer was an inspiration to all who saw it and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
