Headquarters, 95th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 38 (December 7, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Lester F. Krumpos (ASN: 36249376), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company D, *** Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division, on 13 and 14 November 1944, in the vicinity of Bertrange, France. On 13 and 14 November Private Krumpos was one of a small group of soldiers holding out in Bertrange against the enemy forces far superior in numbers. During repeated attacks by enemy infantry and armor, Private Krumpos ran out into the street with a heavy machine gun and raked the streets with fire, inflicting heavy casualties and causing the enemy to withdraw. While the enemy was reorganizing for further attacks, Private Krumpos continually harassed them by small counterattacks of his own. His great courage and indomitable will inspired his comrades to hold out against an enemy of almost overwhelming numbers until help arrived. Private Krumpos’ superb heroism reflects distinct honor on himself and is in accordance with the highest traditions of the military service.
