The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Bertice F. Womack (ASN: 35779679), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of ****, Germany, on 17 April 1945. During an enemy counterattack, one of the squads in Sergeant Womack’s platoon was surrounded by the enemy. Sergeant Womack unhesitatingly ran through intense enemy small arms fire to reach a building near the cut off squad. Although knocked down by the concussion of rocket fire as he reached the building, he entered and from a window threw hand grenades into enemy positions, causing confusion among the enemy force and enabling the squad to deploy and effectively repel the enemy force. Sergeant Womack’s gallant actions and courageous initiative reflect credit upon his character as a noncommissioned officer.
