The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Infantry) Joe B. Jenkinson, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 22 June 1970 while serving as Aero Weapons Platoon Leader with Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date as Company M was being engaged by an enemy force of unknown size Captain Jenkinson was flying overhead in his helicopter. Disregarding his own safety Captain Jenkinson made numerous low level passes over the enemy locations, placing highly accurate suppressive fire upon the hostile force. After expending his ammunition Captain Jenkinson returned to his base to re-supply his helicopter with ammunition. Upon returning to the contact area he escorted a medical evacuation helicopter which was going in to remove several wounded personnel. As a result of his expert flying skill and professional ability, the enemy was completely routed and the friendly casualties were quickly and efficiently evacuated. Captain Jenkinson’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
