The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Edward G. Raff (ASN: 0-1171321), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action near ****, Belgium, on 13 January 1945. When his battery was subjected to an intense enemy artillery barrage while on a convoy move, Captain Raff heroically made his way to several wounded men lying in exposed positions while shells were still falling all about him, administered first aid and carried one of his men to a place from where he could be evacuated. Captain Raff accomplished this task even though an officer accompanying him was killed during this action. The courage, resourcefulness and leadership of Captain Raff was responsible for saving the lives of several of his men and for instilling new confidence into his battery, and are in accord with the military traditions of the United States.
