Headquarters, 41st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 67 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General Edwin Albert Zundel, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding General of the Division Artillery, 41st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Ibodi, Biak Island, on 29 May 1944. Heavy enemy fire had caused an infantry battalion to withdraw thus exposing the artillery battalions to considerable danger. Upon being notified of this, Brigadier General Zundel immediately went forward under enemy fire to confer with his battalion commanders and obtain first hand information as to the safety of the troops. At the time of his arrival one of the artillery battalions was receiving heavy fire, and infantry positions were being hard pressed by the enemy 50 yards away. After issuing orders for effective artillery support, Brigadier General Zundel returned to his command post encountering additional enemy fire. His calm leadership under fire was a great contribution to the successful completion of the mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Brigadier General Zundel, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
