The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Aviation Corps) Randall R. Gray (ASN: 0-5256820), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 20 February 1969, while serving as pilot with the 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, when he received word that a friendly ambush patrol had spotted an enemy force, Lieutenant Gray immediately piloted his helicopter to the area and began flying low level assaults on the hostile positions. After keeping the enemy troops pinned down until helicopter gunships arrived at the scene of the contact, he began shuttling ground troops into the area. As night fell and the friendly force began running low on ammunition, Lieutenant Gray, disregarding the intense hostile fire and the danger presented by the tall trees surrounding the landing zone, flew two re-supply missions to friendly ground elements. First Lieutenant Gray’s outstanding courage and dedication to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
