Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 319 (September 27, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Chan A. Ngin (ASN: 35055573), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 26 January 1945. During an assault over rice paddies against enemy positions located in Barrio Dam, Private First Class Ngin’s platoon leader was seriously wounded by hostile fire and lay in an exposed position. Private First Class Ngin voluntarily went to the rescue. The intense Japanese fire forced him to crawl and squirm over the open terrain until he reached the casualty. Then, moving the wounded man a few inches at a time, he worked his way back to a place of safety. Private First Class Ngin’s courage and devotion to a wounded comrade exemplified the finest traditions of the military service.
