The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Medical Administrative Corps) Carl V. Monson (ASN: 0-1686166), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 7 and 9 February 1945. When an enemy shell seriously wounded three members of a mortar crew, Lieutenant Monson, an assistant Battalion Surgeon, voluntarily ran 100 yards to their side across a fire-swept field, administered blood plasma and first aid, and then helped carry the casualties to safety. On a later date, he observed a wounded soldier staggering around in a dazed condition after being blinded by a head injury. The man was attracting Japanese fire both to himself and to his comrades. Lieutenant Monson unhesitatingly ran to the wounded man, led him to cover, and rendered first aid. Lieutenant Monson’s extreme devotion to duty and his willingness to expose himself to intense enemy fire were responsible for the saving of many lives during the Battle of Manila. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
