The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Roy A. McMurray (ASN: 20506250), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 February 1945. When his company suffered many casualties during an intense hostile mortar barrage, Sergeant McMurray organized all available men into litter squads and supervised the removal of the wounded. The regular medical aid men could not cope with the casualties, and Sergeant McMurray ran across an exposed area four different times to treat the injured. When a member of a litter squad was wounded, Sergeant McMurray took his place and helped carry the litter to safety. Time after time he returned to help the walking wounded and once took an injured comrade onto his shoulders and carried him to safety under heavy Japanese fire. Sergeant McMurray’s actions were directly instrumental in saving the lives of at least eight men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
