The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant George A. Marks (ASN: 36804528), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 20 February, 1945. When Sergeant Marks’ company was ordered to attack across 250 yards of open park that was strewn with mines and afforded the enemy excellent observation and visibility, two platoons moved aggressively into the open and worked quickly towards their objective. Realizing the difficulty and necessity of maintaining contact as the attack progressed, Sergeant Marks, communication sergeant, with a sound power telephone and a reel of wire accompanied the assault units. Although under intense enemy machine gun fire, he continued until he reached the front and had successfully established communications. As the platoons advanced, Sergeant Marks accompanied them, maintaining telephone communications. Just before their objective was seized, the last burst of an enemy machine gun struck Sergeant Marks and killed him. Sergeant Marks’ courage and readiness to assume great personal risk in order to maintain telephone communications contributed greatly to the coordination of the attack and its successful conclusion. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
