The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Robert O. Harris (ASN: 0-5241136), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 8 November 1968 while serving as a platoon leader with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date during the opening moments of a fierce fire fight between Troop B and an enemy force, the troop commander suffered fatal wounds from rocket fragments. Lieutenant Harris, though painfully wounded himself immediately assumed command of the troop. Moving from position to position under relentless stream of deadly small arms, automatic weapons and antitank rocket fire, he quickly and professionally reorganized the embattled troop elements and effected and secured an evacuation area for the casualties. His immediate and professional reaction to the hazardous situation boosted the faltering morale of the troop members and set the stage for the turning of the tide of the battle. First Lieutenant Harris’ actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
