The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert M. Hubbard (ASN: 0-1794946), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Manila, Philippine Islands, during World War II. At dusk on 31 January 1945 in the Clark Field area, Lieutenant Hubbard volunteered to guide a half-track loaded with rations, water, and medical supplies to our front line companies. The route was under direct fire from 90-mm., 47-mm., and 20-mm. enemy weapons, and on the trip forward the vehicle was hit by 20-mm. fire which wounded two men. Disregarding his personal safety, Lieutenant Hubbard courageously stood up in the vehicle to observe and assist the driver. He continued to expose himself to the continual hostile fire and was successful in accomplishing the mission. After returning again to the battalion command post area with the wounded men, he made two additional trips forward with supplies, each time coming under intense Japanese fire. Lieutenant Hubbard was later killed by enemy fire while leading a rifle company in an attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
