The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John D. Hisey (ASN: 20504258), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 and 10 February 1945. When a platoon needed an additional aid man to help treat the many wounded, Private Hisey, attached to a reserve platoon, volunteered to go forward. He scaled a six-foot concrete wall covered by Japanese machine guns, crawled for fifty yards, subjected to enemy mortar, rifle and machine gun fire, reached his objective and worked continuously until all the wounded had been treated. During an assault on enemy positions on the following morning, he was painfully wounded by mortar shell fragments. Private Hisey disregarded his own wounds and remained at the scene of action for an hour, administering first aid to the wounded Infantrymen. Although under enemy fire constantly, he refused to be hospitalized until all the other casualties had been evacuated. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
