The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Robert L. Herndon (ASN: 34105517), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 23 February 1945. When an enemy group penetrated the forward command post of his unit during the night, Corporal Herndon stood atop a light tank with a spotlight and illuminated the roadside ditches as the vehicle moved up and down the road. Although he made a fine target and was completely exposed to intense hostile machine gun, rifle and grenade fire, Corporal Herndon courageously remained at his position for four hours, greatly aiding the observation of his unit and also directing effective fire from his tank’s 37-mm. gun. Corporal Herndon’s action was an instrumental factor in repulsing the enemy attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
