Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 253 (August 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Norwood B. Gunn (ASN: 14080098), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. When his squad leader was killed by a concealed enemy machine gun during the attack against the “Top of the World” near Fort Stotsenburg on 29 January 1945, Private Gun immediately took the lead position of the squad. Then, by daring and skillful maneuver he advanced alone to within 15 yards of the Japanese position into which he accurately threw two grenades, instantly killing three enemy soldiers and silencing the hostile fire. Private Gun’s courageous action enabled his company to continue its advance and quickly accomplish its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
