The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Alexander J. Grossbeck (ASN: 32796341), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 February, 1945. Private Grossbeck, while acting as flank security in an advance, was subjected to fire from a concealed enemy machine gun. One of his companions occupying a position forty yards away was hit and lay in an open area unable to move. Private Grossbeck, unmindful of mortar and machine gun fire, inched forward unprotected, endeavored to rescue his comrade, was mortally wounded in his attempt when only five yards from his goal. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
