Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 123 (May 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade David A. Grindstaff (ASN: 33046762), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 February 1945. During an attack on the enemy in Manila, Sergeant Grindstaff left his covered position and with utter disregard for his own personal safety, ran across a street being raked by heavy machine gun fire to successfully rescue a wounded comrade. In performing this courageous act, he was seriously wounded in the right leg and, at a later date, amputation was necessary. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
