The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles M. Gillette (ASN: 37179506), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 February 1945. Private Gillette, an aid man attached to an infantry platoon, voluntarily crossed 200 yards of open terrain in order to help a seriously wounded comrade. Although the entire area was swept by intense hostile fire, Private Gillette successfully reached the casualty, administered first aid, and then carried and half dragged the injured man back over the same perilous route to a position from which he was evacuated by litter bearers. Private Gillette’s heroic action saved the wounded man’s life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
