The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (General Staff Corps) Thomas W. Fort (ASN: 0-386630), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 April 1945. Major Fort, as Assistant G-3 of an Infantry Division, made a daring reconnaissance for 50 yards in front of the American lines in order to make certain that the correct route of approach was selected for a strategically important assault upon an enemy-held ridge. Undeterred by the sporadic but accurate enemy light machine gun, mortar and small arms fire which covered the area of his reconnaissance, he remained in an unprotected observation point for 30 minutes, coolly appraising the difficult terrain and making tactical notes. While returning from his dangerous mission through the thick undergrowth, Major Fort was fatally wounded by small arms fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
