The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lloyd G. Ellis (ASN: 38520196), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. On 21 April during an attack by an Infantry company on an enemy-held hill in the vicinity of Irisan, Private Ellis, moving at the head of the advance, stormed an enemy 37 millimeter anti-tank gun emplacement. He was fired upon by two Japanese soldiers in a nearby foxhole and narrowly escaped being hit. However, firing accurately and rapidly, he killed both soldiers and then again took the lead in the advance up the hill. He detected the location of an enemy machine gun and, although exposed to enemy fire from all directions, boldly made his way up the hill with the intention of storming the machine gun position. Before he could get close enough to fire at it effectively, a burst from an enemy weapon mortally wounded him. Private Ellis’ heroism and sacrifice inspired his comrades to fierce aggressiveness and they subsequently took the hill. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
