The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Raymond A. Eckert (ASN: 37334720), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. On 12 February 1945, Sergeant Eckert, a radio operator, accompanied his Regimental Executive Officer in the establishment of an observation post on the roof of the Obando Cockpit. While exposed on this bright metal surface, with no possible cover or concealment he was taken under fire by enemy forces several hundred yards away. The fire was of such intensity initially that all personnel except the Executive Officer withdrew from the roof, and Sergeant Eckert was authorized to accompany them to cover. He declined the opportunity and remained to operate his radio. Throughout the next five hours Sergeant Eckert was repeatedly taken under fire, but voluntarily remained in hazardous position. By gallantly remaining at his post, Sergeant Eckert provided great assistance to the Regimental Executive Officer in controlling the action of the attacking unit, and contributed much to the success of the operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
